A luminary in long-distance running, Dr Tripathy is not just a marathon runner but a phenomenon that transcends the boundaries of age and geography. With a six-decade career from 1974 to today, he has distinguished himself as perhaps India's most enduring marathon runner.

Dr Tripathy was born on June 3, 1948, in Mahu, Namouza, Kendrapara district, to Shri Bimbadhar Tripathy and Smt. Ramadevi. His love for sports and athletics was evident even in his younger days. This early interest laid the groundwork for a career that would see him represent India on international soil, running marathons in the UK, South Africa, and Malaysia.

Educationally equipped with a Bachelor's Degree in Science and a second Bachelor's Degree in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, Dr Tripathy has also found success as a veterinary surgeon. He currently resides at Chhatrabazar Canal Road, College Square, Cuttack.

The milestones in Dr Tripathy's illustrious career are as numerous as they are significant. His first notable achievement came in 1963, winning the Dinabandhu Gold Medal for the Best All-rounder Sportsman at Ravenshaw Collegiate School, Cuttack. Fast forward to 1974, Dr Tripathy secured second place in the marathon at the National Games in Jaipur, Rajasthan.

The 1980s were another defining period for him, as he clinched second place in the marathon at YMCA Open India in Delhi and the National Games at Bangalore. After the stupendous performance in Rajasthan, he was selected for three months of India camp at Patiala. At that time he was working as a Junior Veterinary Officer at a very remote place of Odisha Paruabhadi, Kuchinda in the erstwhile Sambalpur district. He shattered records in 1985 by winning the In-state marathon with a record-breaking time of 2:27:58.

As the new millennium dawned, Dr Tripathy's star continued to rise. He was crowned the winner in the Veterans Category at the Standard Chartered International Race in Mumbai. His international accolades include a third-place finish in the Rath Indian Open Marathon in Delhi and a 13th place in the World Veteran Games in Gateshead, UK.

Not just a runner, Dr Tripathy is the epitome of perseverance and indomitable spirit. He has been honored with multiple awards for his exceptional contributions to the sport. In 1974, the Rotary Club and Hon'ble Governor of Odisha, Shri B D Jatti, celebrated his achievements. In 1981, he received a commendation from the Odisha Olympic Association and Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Janaki Ballabh Patnaik. The pinnacle of his career came when he was conferred the prestigious Biju Patnaik Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Sport of Odisha by Hon'ble Chief Minister Shri Naveen Patnaik.
